Importance of CA / ACCA practical experience

One of the reasons that the Chartered Accountants and Chartered Certified Accountants qualification become leading accounting qualification is because theoretical learning is coupled with a component of practical experience. The theoretical component involves completing various papers whilst employed in a recognized accounting role which represents the practical experience component. An important element is for candidates to meet and review their progress with a Chartered Accountant or Chartered Certified Accountant mentor on a regularly basis during the CA and ACCA training period of practical experience.

The CA / ACCA are such qualifications, which have a formal mentoring component – adding further strength to the CA / CCA designation and its national and global recognition.

Purpose of CA / ACCA practical experience

The purpose of the rigorous three to four years practical experience requirement is for candidates to build on their academic qualifications by applying theoretical knowledge and developing the professional skills and values relevant to their specific job.

The workplace (preferably accountancy firm) provides the professional environment for candidates to develop and apply their professional knowledge and skills. It is also in the workplace where they will face real professional issues, not just hypothetical scenarios.

Neglecting the importance can be costly

Through my limited experience in mentoring I have noticed that major portion of young people coming in the profession are either not aware of the importance of practical experience or neglecting it due to one reason or other. Lack of consistency in their approach depriving them with the learning opportunities, as mentor’s role cannot be performed effectively. I have personally observed that mentor loses interest in such students who do not have permanent thinking and a consistent approach towards the acquisition of practical training.

I would request all upcoming CA / ACCA students to the profession to understand the importance of practical training in their professional careers. Especially the ACCA students which due to liberal policies of ACCA sometimes take it so light and do not devote much of their energies in achieving real practical experience.
